Medical Readiness Command – Europe civilian honored with 2026 Spirit of Hope Award at Pentagon Ceremony
SEMBACH, Germany — Dr. John Casey, director of global health engagements for Medical Readiness Command – Europe, has been awarded the 2026 Spirit of Hope Award by the United States Department of War in recognition of his outstanding commitment to service members and their families. The ceremony, hosted by the Deputy Secretary of War, was held in the Pentagon on Sept 23.
The prestigious military decoration is presented annually to individuals or organizations whose work significantly improves the quality of life, well-being and morale of military personnel across the globe. Casey was selected for his extraordinary contributions to operational readiness, healthcare coordination and enduring multinational medical partnerships throughout the European theater.
“At Medical Readiness Command – Europe, Dr. John Casey has played a central role in guiding global health engagements, fostering cross-border collaboration with allied militaries and building interoperability among NATO partners,” said U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Mark Stackle, commander of Medical Readiness Command – Europe and director of Defense Health Network Europe. “John’s strategic coordination has enhanced frontline medical support and improved our multinational medical partnerships across the continent. It is a pleasure and privilege to have him on our team.”
Established in 1997 during the Clinton administration, the Spirit of Hope Award was first granted to iconic entertainer Bob Hope by the U.S. Congress. Created to honor Hope’s legendary dedication to uplifting American troops across five decades of service both inside and outside combat zones, the award serves as a lasting tribute to his legacy of service.
To qualify for the accolade, recipients must epitomize the foundational values that defined Hope’s lifework: duty, honor, courage, loyalty, commitment, integrity and selfless dedication. Honorees must also demonstrate an extraordinary commitment of time, talent or resources to benefit the armed forces community.

Jeremy Johnson, chief of staff for Medical Readiness Command – Europe. “By championing initiatives that measurably improve the readiness and well-being of the force, Dr. Casey has fundamentally enhanced the quality of life for our servicemembers and their families.”
Senior leaders also praised Casey for exemplifying selfless service, emphasizing that his work directly enhances the day-to-day resilience of forces operating in demanding overseas environments.
“Receiving the Spirit of Hope Award is an immense honor, but it represents the collective mission of our entire medical readiness team,” Casey said. “Ensuring that our service members and their families have the support and care they deserve is a commitment we uphold every single day.”
The Department of War presents the award annually on behalf of the service branches, recognizing select military and civilian personnel. Previous recipients of the Spirit of Hope Award include actor Gary Sinise, the late country and western singer, Toby Keith and TV chef Robert Irvine.
